 The
Superintendent of every coal mine in Pennsylvania was required to send to the
Mine Inspector an annual report listing fatal accidents occurring within their
district for the previous year. This volume includes a summary of those
published reports for the western bituminous counties of Pennsylvania for the
years 1888 through 1897. Entries include the name of the deceased, date of
accident, date of death, location of accident, his occupation, and age. Most

The index to death registrations in this publication is a result of an act in
1893 requiring assessors of the townships, boroughs and wards to record such
deaths within their district. This index includes the name of the deceased, date
of death, place of death and document number. With this document number, one can
request from WPGS a copy of the page containing the entire entry of additional
information on the decedent such as age, sex, marital status, occupation, cause
of death and more.
Does not include deaths from the cities of Pittsburgh and Allegheny.
