WPA Home Survey: Allegheny County, PA

The WPA Home Survey project was compiled in 1936 & 1937 by the Works Progress Administration using architects, surveyors, draftsmen and others with skills for this type of work. An example of a record of such a WPA survey can be seen below, for a home in Sewickley, PA.

The WPA inspected every home in Allegheny County, apparently for the County Assessment Board, and compiled the following information for each property:

The front side of the page (pictured above) records the building number, street, stories, type bldg., construction material, number of rooms, baths, floors, heat, age, roof, plumbing, plaster, interior trim, condition, workmanship, basement size, laundry, sewer, rent value, special features, size, cubic construction, u. value, garage cars, const. material, size, condition, value, paved street, transportation factor, school factor, district trend, transition, lot size, solid ground, topography, acreage, a. tillable, owner, address and remarks.

The back side of the page (pictured above) includes a sketch of the home with a top view and a side view with dimensions made by a draftsman.
